HDGameNews.com: HD-DVD players outsell Blu-ray players 4 to 1.

Top News Stories

HD-DVD players outsell Blu-ray players 4 to 1.

It seems that the next generation high definition movie format war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray is far from over.

According to the latest statistics on Amazon, HD-DVD is absolutely crushing Blu-ray to the tune of 4 to 1. Out of the top 20 " most popular items in DVD Players and Recorders" HD-DVD occupies 4 different slots, including the #1 slot. On the Blu-Ray side things are not looking so good with only 1 slot and it sits at #20. See the list here.

Blu-ray does at the moment have more support and backing from movie studios. However with HD-DVD posting sales numbers like these movie studios may start to make the jump or at the very least begin publishing for both formats. Do not forget that this is a money game and publishers wants their titles published on the largest installed base possible.

One thing is for certain. This holiday shopping season will be very interesting.

Doesn't include PS3 though, does it? :)

Yeah, count those PlayStation 3s which play blu-ray out of the box. I think you might have a different story.

Stupid idiot! Why doesn't incluse ps3 in this count? Blu ray sells 2x1 HDDVD in USA, 4x1 in Europe, 8x1 in Japan. 7x3 in Wold. "It seems that the next generation high definition movie format war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray is far from over." are you stupid? Flamer!

wow ppl. just because you have spent some bucks for one of these formats (HD-DVD or BD) there is no reason to get that harsh.

fact is that BD is selling 64% HD films and HD-DVD only 36% at the moment (USA).

so these hardware figures that show that standalone HD-DVD players are selling 4:1 are questionable if not plain wrong.

if the PS3 is not counted the 360 HD-DVD drive shouldn't either.

btw. there are more PS3's out there than HD-DVD players alone so I think something is fishy here...

It's a false measurement since many people who have a PS3 don't know or care that it's a Blu-Ray player and may never use it as such.

In fact, Video game consoles in general are packed with features that most users never use.

It's outselling on Amazon. That's one merchant. Granted it's a large merchant but this is hardly representative of the entire market.

Gee can you tell the people who comment because they already blew $500 or more on a blu ray and don't want to look foolish? It's like the betamax vs vhs all over it doesn't matter which is better the hd player is now half the price, bluray better follow suit or goodbye. Buyers like cheaper.

The sales ratios of Amazon are only partially related to the actual sell rates. I have no idea where you are getting "4 to 1" other than making it up.

Finally, HD DVD players have been selling at the #1 spot for months, and yet Blu-ray is always selling more software. I wonder why that is? Maybe because a lot of them own the PS3? Which you conveniently didn't count?

Stop being a fanboy.

i just understand some people when they say u cant add the hd dvd drive as part of the numbers when honestly you can because u buy the add on solely for movies nothing more people buy the ps3 1st and foremost for games and that is what this article is about stand alone players not game machines that play blu ray as a added feature stop fooling yourselves

And if they count the Blu-Ray on the ps3, you have to count the installed base of xbox 360 HD-DVD players. We all know which one of the 2 platforms here has a larger installed base.

Perhaps more Blue Ray discs are being sold because the yuppies that own blue ray players are the fools that have a ton of money to throw around and can buy more blue ray dvds than the average man *who owns an hd-dvd player* can afford... DUHHHHHRRRRR

I am buyer for a electronics retail chain. We sell Blu-Ray,
players, PS3, and HD-DVD players and software. There has been a shift to HD-DVD over the last couple of monrhs. We are selling more HD-DVD than Blu-Ray. The PS3 is dead. The games keep getting delayed and the sales are horrible!

PS3 SHOULD NEVER COUNT IN 'STANDALONE' SALES...MOVIE STUDIOS COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT PS3 SALES BECAUSE IN THE LONG RUN THE 95% OF MOVIE GOERS ARE NOT GOING TO BUY A PS3 TO WATCH MOVIES...THEY ARE GOING TO BUY A STAND-ALONE. PS3 IS MEANINGLESS TO LONG TERM MOVIE SALES AND THE ONLY THING KEEPING BLU-RAY ALIVE. ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE IS JUST DESPERATE TO KEEP BLU-RAY ALIVE.

"Buyers want cheaper."

EXACTLY! The whole Mac versus PC war is based on it. Even though most PC users will admit the UNIX-based Mac OS is more advanced, they don't buy a Mac because they're (generally) more expensive.

(This is ignoring completely the benefit that modern Macs can dual-boot Windows and Mac OS X, which off-the-shelf PCs cannot.)

HD-DVD sales were actually 7 to 1 through most of the summer. I don't care enough to look up stats, but you can find them all posted at AVS Forum.

It's no secret that nearly 2 million PS3's have been sold vs. a few hundred thousand HD-DVD's, but BD owners face 2 dilemmas. One poll said 85% of BD PS3 owners bought it to play games, not watch movies. Another poll said something like 78% who would buy HD movies wanted a cheap stand-alone player, not a game machine.

Personally, I own HD-DVD, but I wish one or the other would die so it would end this stupid pissing contest. Is every BD owner a 12-year-old?
