Sony secures exclusive for Grand Theft Auto 7 ( Name yet to be announced )
Friday
According to the November 2007 issue # 76 of the Official Xbox Magazine Sony has secured the next Grand Theft Auto, which would be number 7 in the series, to be a true exclusive to the Playstation 3."Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of the Cell and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that" as said by Sony's Michael Shorrock in a statement to the press. " We handed Rockstar a signed blank check because we were short sighted enough to let Grand Theft Auto's exclusivity get away from us. Oops!"Looks like the Xbox fans may be out of luck when it come to the next installment of Grand Theft Auto. If they do release a 360 version it sounds like it would have to be on multiple dvd discs if the game truly takes advantage of Blu-ray.
One thing is for sure. This will be interesting to watch play out. Stay tuned!
Peace! I am off to work.
*CLARIFICATION* It seems some of our readers are totally misunderstanding this post. The OXM article is NOT referring to the soon to be released Grand Theft Auto IV. What it is referring to is the next game in the series. We have also noticed that some readers seem to think that OXM published this news as a joke. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. As a matter of fact it was not even published as a rumor but as news in the "Inbox" section on page 106. If you don't believe us go buy the magazine.

Why would a comment from someone that works for Sony be in a Offical Xbox Magazine. That is weird. Please tell me about that?

Maybe because they want the fans to make sure Microsoft doesn't F this up?

The Rockstar website says that it will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360. I don't know what this guy is talking about. I think it will look better on PS3 but get the facts straight.

1pstart.com already debunked this. It was published in OXM as a joke. I'm hoping that this site is keeping with the joke (hoping), because the quote from Sony about Blu-Ray and CELL processor was taken from a statment involving the BRAND NEW franchise that R* is creating for the PS3. Not L.A. Noire or GTA. Twas a joke. GTA has been branded multi-platform for life.

Oh God, this blogger is a ditz!! Calling it GTA 7 is so misleading and the fact that this news was mention back in July!!

Notice the quote on the bottom of the page? Wow, same this as the magazine quote. - At 9:13 AM, said...

It isn't so much that they are calling it GTA 7, they said it is the 7th game in the series. Meaning you have GTA 1-4, Liberty Stories, and Vice City Stories you are up to 6 there. So it isn't miss leading so much as it seems it was missunderstood.
As for this being true or not, who is to say. Microsoft already has exclusivity rights on supposed downlodable content that is supposed to be made available for GTA IV once it is released. Wouldn't be so far fetched for Sony to actually try to do something exclusive with Rockstar also seeing as it is true that Blueray holds more then DVD and for GTA IV it needs to be compatible for both systems so that it is in fact...the same game on both systems.
Whether they originally built the game engine and mechanics to work for Xbox 360 or PS3 is Null and void since it is a title that is coming out on both systems they merely just need to make it run on both and not make it better for one or the other (Even though as stated before Microsoft already put exculsivity on downloadable content for GTA IV).
In the end it isn't really which is better that people are looking for from GTA IV, it is how Rockstar is placing in new inovations, gameplay mechanics, and next gen renduring capablities and still make it feel like a freat Free roam game like they always have. - At 10:33 AM, said...

I think you mean GTA I-IV, Vice city and San andreas. I don't think most actually consider Vice City/Liberty City stories as a free standing game. If they did then this would be another reason why this is false since that would mean the Exclusive title would be 9th in the series, not 7th.

This quote is taken from news broken by GI.biz back in July. It doesn't refer to the Grand Theft Auto series - it's about Rockstar creating a new series for the PS3.
Quite how anyone has interpreted it as being a reference to 'GTA 7' is beyond me. - At 11:36 AM, Jim_Panse said...

They mean: GTA GTA2 GTA:London the first three games.
Then comes: GTAIII GTA:VC GTA:SA
Grand Theft Auto IV will be the 7. game. And its not only PS3!
The Xbox version is already finished. - At 12:13 PM, Chris said...

Whoever wrote this article needs to re-read the magazine.
The magazine article never mentioned anything about this "blank check" relating to an upcoming GTA game. In fact, the article was refering to a completely new franchise Rockstar is making for Sony. The only reason GTA was mentioned in the article is because Sony was basically saying "We let Microsoft get their hands on GTA, we want to make sure we dont lose this new franchise to them."
Sony DID NOT secure a new GTA title. They secured a new unrelated franchise. - At 4:09 AM, said...
