Sony's Playstation 3: Suffers another major setback.

Earlier this year Sony and Epic announced that Unreal Tournament 3 would be exclusive to the Playstation 3 - for this year anyway with the Xbox 360 version following sometime in 2008. Finally, Sony had something to entice gamers to take the plunge this holiday season right?

Wrong.

Epic's Mark Rein announced yesterday that Unreal Tournament 3 on the Playstation 3 would not ship this year but slip into a yet unannounced date in 2008. A Midway representative confirmed to GameSpot that UT3 would still see a period of console exclusivity on the PS3. But for how long? 1 month, 2 months. 6 months?

At does it really matter if Sony has a period of exclusivity in 2008? Sony needed Unreal Tournament 3 this holiday season to help sell consoles.

Sony's rumored Playstation 3 price drop to $399 sounds very nice. But with no "A+" exclusive titles shipping this holiday season Sony could be in for disappointing sales figures. This combined with Microsoft's Halo 3 breaking sales records and moving consoles at historic levels Sony's console may be doomed to a distant 3rd place in this console cycle.
