See Halo 3's Master Chief come to life: Amazing video.

This is probably one of the most amazing things that I have seen in a long time. In this video you will see an artist freehand Halo 3's Master Chief from absolutely nothing to a poster quality image using Photoshop.

Dont worry. The video does not take hours. The video runs at a high speed so you can see the whole process quickly.

TVG Reviews Aliens vs. Predator Requiem

Rebellion return to the AVP series after 8 years' absence, with the official game of this Christmas' movie...

It's been a long time since Oxford based developers Rebellion has taken the helm of an Aliens vs. Predator game. Their first title on the doomed Atari Jaguar, released in 1995, is widely regarded as one of the best games on the console. Four years later, Rebellion released another critically acclaimed AVP game on the PC. It's fair to say that the developers were masterful craftsmen when it came to creating game worlds inspired by the cult-classic comic book series.

Unfortunately, it appears that Rebellion has lost their way a little when it came to developing their new title, Aliens vs. Predator Requiem, the official game of the movie that's due out this Christmas Season. Okay, so the fact that it's a film licensed game should've tipped off to the fact that it would be a stinker; but we at TVG were really hoping that entrusting the franchise under the rich heritage of the Rebellion name would counteract this somewhat. Unfortunately, we at TVG were very wrong.

BBC: The HD format battle rumbles on

BBC Click - Chris Long, Friday, 30 November 2007:

"The advent of High Definition TV has spurred a minor boom in the sales of screens on which to watch such gorgeous images. But buying a HD TV involves making a difficult choice about which of the two competing HD formats you back."

This report overviews the three major differences between the two competing formats: supporting consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360), player prices, and the special features interfaces (BD-J vs. HDi).

MSNBC: 'Kane and Lynch' is a game-noir gem (Verdict: Buy it)

MSNBC contributor Scott Taves reviews Kane & Lynch: Dead Men:

"Games have an uneven record when it comes to character development, storytelling and atmosphere. Too often the emphasis is on frames-per-second and surface textures. Its no wonder many games leave me feeling cold and unmoved.

'Kane & Lynch: Dead Men', out now for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360, is an exception to the graphics-driven norm..."

Ziff Davis staff holds impromptu GameSpot rally

A number of Ziff Davis staffers (including a few writers for 1UP, arguably GameSpot's biggest competition) recently crafted an uplifting banner and marched to the GameSpot offices just two blocks away. The demonstration was a response to the recent unexplained firing of GameSpot contributor Jeff Gerstmann. After hearing the rumors that Gerstmann was fired due to pressure from advertisers following his lackluster review of Kane and Lynch, the ZD staff decided to show their support for their fellow gaming journalist.

"Jeff Gerstmann and I got to work together at GameSpot for 10 years. It seems he didn't get a chance to properly say goodbye here this week. This is simply the opinion of a longtime fan of this site: As the longest-tenured GameSpot editor, Jeff Gerstmann deserved a respectful send-off."

Xbox 360's DivX/XviD support doesn't include Media Center

Engadget writes:

"While most Xbox 360 owners could find something to look forward to in the Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update, Media Extender users just found out they've been skipped over, again. Just like the previous update adding H.264 support, the 360's newfound DivX compatibility doesn't apply when its being used as a Window Media Center Extender. AC3 audio support as well as a host of other media-related updates are nice, but Microsoft is leaving some of its most dedicated users out in the cold. We wonder what will get DivX first, Xbox 360 Media Center or the PlayStation 3?"

Sony, Pepsi, Dell, Support Gamespot

Not all advertisers are headed out the door, over the Gamespot controversy. Several companies, like Mountain Dew (Pepsi), Dell, and Sony are devouring the now available inventory left by the exodus of game ads.

From the article: "Despite boycotts and canceled subscriptions, it seems at least some companies recognize a hot topic when they see one. Unfortunately for those companies, many gamers are taking mental notes."

"If they want to support Gamespot's total breakdown in editorial credibility, then they have to understand that there are consequences involved," said 'HulleyToe', a gamer from San Mateo, CA. "It may not hurt them now, but just as advertisers use their dollars to influence companies like Gamespot and CNET, I can use my money to influence the advertisers."

Adverjournalism: The Role of Ad Dollars In Journalism

Gamer 2.0 editor Amadeo Plaza's note - December 1,2007:

"It should come as no surprise that just about every gaming forum on the internet is ablaze right now following the news of GameSpots termination of long-time editor, Jeff Gerstmann. This article, however, is not an exposé or look into what really happened at GameSpot this week. Rather, consider this a look at the direction of gaming journalism, advertising, and how this all plays a role in the content you read."

Plaza claims he has background in journalism as well as advertising/marketing, which means he has a fair understanding of both sides of the fence. Here he reveals the changing dynamic between editorial and advertising in an industry that is becoming increasingly mainstream.

How Microsoft Can Make You Feel Happier About Having to Pay for Xbox Live

Phillip Levin of 360.advancedmn.com writes, "It's that time of the year again. I first became a subscriber of Xbox Live four years ago sometime in December, and that means each December I prepare to watch Microsoft debit my checking account while I ponder what it is exactly that I am paying the company $50 a year for. Sure, when you look at how much we spend on games these days at $60 bucks a pop, the hobby isn't cheap just $50 every 12 months isn't that bad. Truthfully, things could be worse. But, then again, there's that rebellious part of me that questions what it is exactly we are getting for the money we pay to use Xbox Live even if it's really not all that much money in the wider scheme of things."

Gamespot Editor Says CNET Firing a "Disaster"

"Remember SimCity? Remember what a joy it was to build up a fully functioning, living, breathing city, full of life and wonderment? Then, at some point down the road, after you've built up your city to the peak of its productiveness, you'd start mashing the disaster button and a wide variety of tornadoes, earthquakes, and fake Godzillas would come tromping through, laying fiery waste to every bit of what you'd worked so painstakingly to create? Yeah. It's a little bit like that. Except someone hit the disaster button for me."

- GameSpot editor Alex Navarro on the state of CNET after the tech publisher fired his colleague Jeff Gerstmann, editorial director of the videogame-reviews site, on still-unexplained grounds.

Ass Effect - from Something Awful

From Joystiq - Griffin McElroy, Dec 1st, 2007:

"We've recently finished our first play-through Bioware's gargantuan space opera, and while we walked away from the experience with great satisfaction, we humbly suggest they change the title of the game from Mass Effect to 'The Galactic Adventures of Chatty Cathy.' Seriously, you'll exchange more words with your enemies than you will bullets. It's like a 12 Angry Men simulator, only in space, and sans Tony Danza.

One of the goons at Something Awful recently made a parody of the lengthy conversation system in Mass Effect. Don't judge the comic by it's corny title (Ass Effect? Really?), as it actually has a few nuggets of comedy gold. However, if you haven't played the game yet, you might not get some of the jokes -- in which case, we present an alternate comic: Marmaduke!

He's a dog who thinks he's a person!"

Note: The comic has 5 pages.

'Mass Effect is enjoyable, but not a masterpiece' - Destructoid's review

Destructoid writes:

"Mass Effect is not a revolutionary RPG -- hell, it's not even particularly innovative. It isn't a sprawling 40-hour epic, it doesn't include particularly great action, and it won't change the way we handle dialogue trees in role-playing games. Given how revolutionary Mass Effect seemed during its initial announcement, these realities may be hard to face -- but, like all crushing truths, you'll have to come to terms with them eventually. Once you do, of course, you'll be much more likely to have fun with this flawed, but enjoyable action-RPG."

"All in all, Mass Effect is a good game which will disappoint nearly everyone who plays it. Immensely flawed in its design choices, but absolutely fantastic in its attention to character and atmosphere, Mass Effect is enjoyable, but not a masterpiece; entertaining, but not revolutionary; epic and emotionally involving, but disappointing. It is not a great game -- but it is, generally, a good one."

Score: 7/10

"Based on a series of Polish fantasy novels, The Witcher is a one of the growing list of titles emerging from the new hotbed of development that is Eastern Europe. Stamped upon the rear of the games packaging are the words, "there is no good, no evil only decisions and consequences." This statement weaves a thematic thread throughout the games narrative and is something that sets The Witcher apart from many other RPG titles, providing it with a mature starting point from which to begin its storytelling."

Which Games Console Is The Best Choice For A Gift This Holiday Season?

As Much as people all love Christmas, it can be a stressful time - especially when consumers agonise over finding the perfect presents.

Videogame consoles make ideal gifts but, if people are not an expert, deciding which one to opt for can be fearfully tricky, especially since this is the first year that all three next-generation consoles have been available at Christmas, as well as the now superseded but still temptingly cheap PlayStation 2.
